An oak-framed pergola with hand-fabricated steel brackets in a Suffolk walled garden by Eastscape

Bespoke fencing across Suffolk

A garden’s boundaries do a lot of work — privacy, security, screening, framing the views you want and hiding the ones you don’t. Good fencing should feel deliberate. It should match the architecture of the house, the planting you’ve got, and the style of the rest of the garden.

We design and install fencing across Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk in a range of styles, from traditional close-board and post-and-rail to contemporary slatted hardwood screens and concealed-fixing systems. Where standard panels don’t fit, we make bespoke. Where existing fencing can be repaired rather than replaced, we’ll say so.

Fencing types we install

  • Close-board featheredge — traditional, robust, the workhorse boundary fence
  • Slatted hardwood screens — contemporary, beautiful, perfect for modern gardens
  • Post-and-rail — for paddocks, larger gardens and country settings
  • Picket and palisade — front-garden and cottage-garden traditional styles
  • Trellising — for climbers, screening, and the top of solid fences to add height
  • Hit-and-miss and venetian — for partial screening that still lets light through
  • Estate fencing — discrete steel railings for country properties

Posts, foundations and fixings

A fence is only as strong as what holds it up. We concrete posts properly to depth, use treated softwood or hardwood posts (or steel where appropriate), and select fixings that won’t stain the timber over time. Where ground conditions are difficult — heavy clay, exposed sites, high water tables — we adjust the foundation depths and methods to suit.

Pergolas, arbours and garden structures

Beyond fencing, we build bespoke pergolas, arbours, garden buildings and outdoor structures designed for their specific setting. Recent work includes oak-framed pergolas with hand-fabricated steel brackets in our Walled Pool Garden project, and timber-and-metal structures on several private estates.

Pergolas in particular need careful design — they need to be tall enough not to feel cramped, structured enough to take climbing planting, and proportioned to the space they sit in. We work from sketches with our clients to develop a scheme before any timber is cut.
